Dr. Nkusi Agabe Emmy

About Me:

Prof. Nkusi Agabe Emmy is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, where he provides highly specialized care for patients with complex disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. Recognized as one of Rwanda's foremost neurosurgeons, he combines exceptional clinical expertise with distinguished academic leadership and a longstanding commitment to advancing neurosurgical care, education, and research both nationally and across Sub-Saharan Africa. Throughout his career, he has played a transformative role in strengthening neurosurgical services, building specialist training programs, and mentoring the next generation of African neurosurgeons.

Prof. Nkusi's clinical practice encompasses the diagnosis and surgical management of a broad spectrum of neurological conditions. His professional interests include neuro-critical care, neuro-oncology, spine surgery, neurovascular surgery, traumatic brain injury, complex cranial surgery, cerebrovascular disorders, and the management of spinal trauma and degenerative spinal diseases. He is committed to delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care while working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients requiring highly specialized neurosurgical treatment.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, Prof. Nkusi serves as an Associate Professor and Program Director of Neurosurgery at the University of Rwanda. He has been instrumental in shaping neurosurgical education in the country, having led the development of Rwanda's first structured Neurosurgery Residency Curriculum between 2011 and 2013. This landmark achievement established the foundation for locally training neurosurgeons and significantly strengthened the country's specialist surgical workforce. He continues to provide academic leadership through postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, clinical supervision, and research mentorship, training neurosurgeons who now serve patients throughout Rwanda and the wider East and Central African region.

His influence extends beyond Rwanda through his longstanding leadership within the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Prof. Nkusi serves as the Panel Head for Neurosurgery and has previously held key positions as Program Director for COSECSA Training at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, Rwanda's Country Representative to COSECSA, and a member of the COSECSA Court of Examiners from 2016 to 2022. Through these leadership roles, he has contributed significantly to strengthening postgraduate surgical education, standardizing neurosurgical training, improving accreditation and examination processes, and promoting excellence in specialist surgical practice across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Alongside his clinical and academic responsibilities, Prof. Nkusi has established himself as an accomplished clinician-scientist with a strong commitment to advancing neurosurgical research, particularly within resource-limited healthcare settings. His research focuses on neurosurgical education and workforce development, neurotrauma, traumatic brain injury, neurovascular diseases, spine surgery, stroke management, neuro-oncology, emergency and trauma care, global surgery, and health systems strengthening. His work has been published in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals, including World Neurosurgery, the East and Central African Journal of Surgery, and Neurology and Neurobiology. His notable research includes studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical care delivery in Rwanda, the trauma burden at Rwanda Military Referral and Teaching Hospital, the evolution of neurosurgical training in Sub-Saharan Africa, Chiari malformations, stroke management, traumatic brain injury, spinal surgery outcomes, and strategies for strengthening surgical systems in low-resource settings. Through this body of work, he continues to generate evidence that informs clinical practice and contributes to improved patient outcomes across Africa.

Prof. Nkusi is equally passionate about surgical education and professional development. Throughout his career, he has organized and directed numerous national and international educational initiatives, including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses, AO Spine workshops, neurosurgical skills training programs, COSECSA curriculum review sessions, faculty development initiatives, simulation-based surgical education, and continuing professional development activities. His educational philosophy emphasizes technical excellence, patient safety, critical thinking, multidisciplinary collaboration, and lifelong learning, ensuring that future generations of surgeons are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required to deliver high-quality surgical care.

His commitment to strengthening healthcare systems has also been demonstrated through active participation in international academic collaborations, including the Human Resources for Health Program in Rwanda. Through this initiative, he worked alongside international universities and specialists to enhance postgraduate medical education, faculty development, specialist clinical training, and institutional capacity building. These partnerships have contributed significantly to the sustainable growth of neurosurgical services and medical education in Rwanda.

Prof. Nkusi's outstanding professional achievements have earned him recognition both nationally and internationally. He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (FCS-ECSA), an International Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (IFAANS), and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is also a member of the Harvey Cushing Society of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, reflecting his standing among distinguished neurosurgeons worldwide and his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of surgical excellence.

Among his many accomplishments, Prof. Nkusi played a pivotal role in establishing the Rwanda Neurosurgical Centre in 2010, an achievement that significantly expanded access to specialized neurosurgical care within the country. His leadership has also contributed to the development of trauma systems, disaster preparedness initiatives, emergency surgical services, and postgraduate surgical education, helping position Rwanda as a regional leader in specialist surgical care and surgical training.
