About Me:
Dr. Marie Goretti Hategekimana is a Consultant Anesthesiologist and Pediatric Anesthesia Fellow at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, with extensive experience in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, critical care, healthcare leadership, and medical education. She is committed to advancing safe anesthesia practices, improving surgical outcomes, and strengthening specialist healthcare services through clinical excellence, research, and professional mentorship.
Dr. Hategekimana earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) before pursuing postgraduate specialization in Anesthesiology, obtaining a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Anesthesiology. Throughout her career, she has developed expertise in perioperative care, critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, patient safety, and healthcare quality improvement. She is currently pursuing advanced subspecialty training as a Pediatric Anesthesia Fellow at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, further strengthening her expertise in the anesthetic management of neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing complex surgical procedures. Prior to joining King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, Dr. Hategekimana served as a Specialist Anesthesiologist at Muhima Hospital, where she held several leadership responsibilities, including Head of the Department of Anesthesia. In this role, she provided clinical leadership for anesthesia services while overseeing activities related to ethics, education, research, and resuscitation programs. Her work contributed significantly to strengthening perioperative care, patient safety initiatives, and professional development within the institution. Earlier in her career, Dr. Hategekimana served as a Junior Consultant and Head of the Department of Anesthesia at Kibuye Referral Hospital, where she played an instrumental role in developing anesthesia services and enhancing access to safe surgical care. Her experience spans the management of patients undergoing major and minor surgical procedures, emergency surgeries, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, and critical care support. Beyond her hospital-based work, Dr. Hategekimana has participated in specialized surgical outreach initiatives, including cleft lip and palate surgery programs in collaboration with international partners such as Smile Train. These experiences have strengthened her commitment to equitable access to surgical and anesthesia care for vulnerable populations. Dr. Hategekimana is also recognized as an emerging healthcare leader. She has participated in international leadership development programs focused on advancing women's leadership in healthcare and strengthening health systems. Through her leadership, teaching, and clinical work, she continues to contribute to the development of future healthcare professionals and the advancement of anesthesia services in Rwanda and the region.
