Welcome to the Division of Education, Training, and Research at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda. We are dedicated to providing high-quality education, training, and research opportunities for healthcare professionals in Rwanda and the surrounding region. Our mission is to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery and improve health outcomes by advancing knowledge and skills. The Division is divided into two directorates to ensure that our educational and research programs are organized and delivered effectively.

About Africa Health Sciences University
Located in Rwanda, Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) is a newly accredited health sciences institution training the next generation of health professionals across medicine, pharmacy, nursing and midwifery, laboratory technology, radiography, and other allied health professionals. It will launch its first academic programs in September 2024.

Academic Programs
AHSU is now accepting applications for the following undergraduate programs, which will start on September 2, 2024. Admitted candidates will be primarily based at Kacyiru District Hospital, Muhima District Hospital, and King Faisal Hospital Rwanda for the duration of their training.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates should meet all of the following criteria:
o Secondary (A-level) or high school diploma
o National exam scores with at least two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry or Physics and Biology from the following subject combinations, or equivalent:
o Physics-Chemistry-Biology (PCB)
o Math-Chemistry-Biology (MCB)
o Biology-Chemistry-Geography (BCG)
for any candidates with foreign qualifications Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral English.
Required Application Materials
Applicants will be required to upload all of the following documentation to be considered for admissions.
o Cover letter, outlining the candidate’s interest in joining the program
o Curriculum Vitae (CV)
o Certified copies of academic transcripts and degrees (in English or with notarized translated copies) and equivalencies where applicable
o Rwanda national exam scores
o Copy of passport or Rwanda national identification
o Personal statement: Tell us at least 3 reasons why you are the best candidate for the program at AHSU.
How do you plan to use your skills as a midwife to impact the health system in Rwanda?
o Names and contact details of 2 references, with at least one being an academic mentor
Application Process
The Office of Admissions considers candidates on a holistic basis, considering their performance throughout the application process.
Applications will be submitted online via : and candidates are required to submit all supporting documentation. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to sit for an entrance examination, and top candidates will then be invited for admissions interviews. Below are important application dates. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The research directorate is responsible for conducting research that advances healthcare knowledge and improves patient outcomes. The directorate addresses some of the most pressing healthcare challenges facing our community, such as infectious, non-communicable, and maternal and child health. The Directorate also provides support for research activities, including the development of research proposals, the acquisition of funding, and the publication of research findings.
The directorate of research specifically focuses on:
01. Ensuring that all research activities at KFHR including academic and research are conducted in full compliance with all applicable laws, ethical standards, guidelines, regulations, codes of practice, policies, and procedures.
02. Ensuring that the knowledge gained from research conducted at KFHR or by KFHR staff members is widely disseminated and translated as much as possible to impact change in policy and practice.
03. Overseeing the activities of committees in charge of Research Governance and Ethics in the Hospital.
04. Supporting the research agenda in the hospital
05. Supporting the Ethics and Research Committee in charge of research protocol review and approval
06. Generating research grant and their management
07. Working closely with the directorate of clinical education and research in building the research capacity of students and staff.

01. A request letter addressed to the CEO of the hospital
02. Full protocol (Word format) and budget
03. Designated KFHR point person indicated in the protocol (if the applicant is not affiliated to KFHR)
04. Curriculum vitae of Principal Investigators
05. Any other ethical approval received
06. A recommendation from the HoD / Supervisor if the applicant is KFHR staff
07. Proof of payment of the ethical research certificate
Fees for KFHR Ethical Research Clearance Certificate
01. Undergraduate students and KFH staff or staff seconded to KFH: Free of charge
02. Master students from Local or EAC institutions: 25,000 Frw
03. Sponsored Ph.D. Student from Local or EAC institution: 200,000 Frw
04. Sponsored local and EAC individual researchers: 250,000 Frw
05. Local and EAC institution/ Organization: 300, 000 Frw
06. A researcher from outside EAC: 400,000 Frw
07. IRB extension: Half of the rate concerned
08. Expedited review: Half the price related to the category
Expedited review process: Any researcher seeking approval from KFH IRB but has already received another approval from any other recognized IRB will submit the protocol for review. Since the expedited review still requires a review, the applicant will be requested to pay half the price of the category where his research fits for funded projects. For non-funded projects, the expedited review will be free of charge. The ethical clearance fees apply to the above category and include the submission fees. No refund should be done whether the application is successfully approved or rejected. However, the researcher will be allowed to resubmit amendments or address the recommendation of the committee

The education and training directorate delivers education and training programs for healthcare professionals in Rwanda and the surrounding region. The Directorate offers various programs, including nursing and midwifery training, residency and fellowship programs, and continuing medical education (CME) programs. It also supports the development of curricula and the delivery of educational resources to healthcare professionals.
The Directorate of education and training specifically focuses on:
- Promoting an outstanding clinical learning environment based on the principles of high quality and safe care for patients and families and serving as a liaison between the Education Provider Institutions and the hospital.
- Initiating and encouraging the hospital staff to engage in academic and contract research activities.
- Promoting capacity-building initiatives for staff development by organizing regular seminars, training, and courses.
- Planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the execution of planned continuous professional development, education, and research activities in the hospital.
- Creating opportunities for networking and collaborative links between the hospital and other institutions with similar objectives in and out of the country.
Prospective students who want to do their observership or internship/ clerkship at KFHR are in two categories:
1. Observership: Students who aspire to join the medical school usually called pre-medicine can apply for clinical observership at KFHR.
2. Internship: This refers to undergraduate (Medical students, pharmacy, nurses & midwives, and allied health sciences) and postgraduate (residents and fellows) who are still under training and registered at a recognized and accredited university in Rwanda or outside the country. They work under the supervision of consultants and other clinical mentors.
Before starting their internship, they should apply for a clinical placement at KFHR through the clinical education portal.

FOR POSTGRADUATES, please submit the following documents.
For students (undergraduates and postgraduates) from universities that have signed an MoU with KFHR such as the University of Rwanda, they will be required to submit their clinical placement rotation plans and clinical placement objectives through the portal. Their institution will apply on their behalf; however, they will be required to log in to the system and sign the internship agreement and read and understand the rules and regulations of the hospitals.
