About Me:
Dr. Niyonshuti Norbert is a Consultant General Surgeon with subspecialty training in thoracic surgery and a strong academic focus on surgical outcomes, surgical education, and health systems strengthening. He holds a Master of Medicine (MMed) in General Surgery from the University of Rwanda.
Following completion of his residency training, he worked as a General Surgeon at Ruhengeri Level II Teaching Hospital, where he managed a broad spectrum of emergency and elective surgical conditions. During this period, he gained extensive experience in trauma surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, and acute surgical care while contributing to surgical service delivery and resident training.
He subsequently completed advanced fellowship training in thoracic surgery at Mohammed VI University and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Ibn Rochd, Casablanca, Morocco, where he acquired expertise in complex thoracic procedures. He has also undertaken specialized training in hernia surgery and completed advanced laparoscopic training at IRCAD Africa, with a particular focus on minimally invasive techniques, including Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).
Dr. Niyonshuti is actively involved in the development of thoracic surgical services in Rwanda through collaborations with expert thoracic surgeons affiliated with the American College of Surgeons. His clinical practice encompasses thoracic oncology, trauma surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, and thoracic procedures involving the lungs, mediastinum, diaphragm, and chest wall.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Niyonshuti is actively engaged in academic medicine and surgical education. He serves as an Education Coordinator at the African University of Health Sciences and has contributed to undergraduate medical training, for which he received a Certificate of Appreciation from the University of Global Health Equity.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Rwanda Surgical Society, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and the National Trauma Systems Development Taskforce in Rwanda.
Dr. Niyonshuti currently practices at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, where he is involved in advanced thoracic surgery, general surgery, surgical education, and the training of residents and fellows. His research interests include thoracic oncology, complex airway surgery, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, trauma systems, surgical education, and surgical outcomes in resource-limited settings. He has authored and co-authored publications on topics including carinal pneumonectomy under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), quality of life among patients living with stomas in Rwanda, comparative outcomes of emergency laparotomies performed during daytime versus nights and weekends in Rwandan teaching hospitals, and other areas of thoracic and general surgery.
