Dr. Nkubito Gatera Valens

About Me:

Dr. Valens Nkubito Gatera is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist with over 15 years of clinical experience and advanced subspecialty training in Fetal Medicine. He serves as the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, where he leads the delivery of specialized women's health services, with a particular focus on maternal-fetal medicine, prenatal diagnosis, and the management of high-risk pregnancies.

Dr. Gatera completed his subspecialty training in Fetal Medicine at the renowned Harris Birthright Centre for Fetal Medicine, King’s College Hospital, United Kingdom. He is widely recognized as a pioneer of Fetal Medicine in Rwanda and has played a significant role in advancing prenatal care and fetal health services in the country.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Gatera is actively involved in medical education, research, and professional development. He serves as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Africa Health Sciences University, where he contributes to the training, mentorship, and development of future healthcare specialists. He has also participated in the development of several academic curricula, including the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) subspecialty training program at the University of Rwanda.

Dr. Gatera is a passionate advocate for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, as well as promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights. His professional interests include fetal medicine, prenatal diagnosis, high-risk obstetrics, maternal health, medical education, and clinical research.

He currently serves as the First Vice President of the Rwanda Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RSOG) and is a Founding Faculty Member of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ECSACOG), contributing to the advancement of postgraduate training and professional standards across the region.
