Dr. Gaston Nyirigira is a Senior Consultant Anesthesiologist and Pain Specialist at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, internationally recognized for his contributions to anesthesiology, pain medicine, medical education, research, and healthcare leadership. With extensive experience in perioperative medicine, critical care, pain management, and postgraduate medical training, he has established himself as one of the leading voices in anesthesia and pain medicine in Africa.
He currently serves as Chair of Postgraduate Medical Education and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU), where he leads initiatives aimed at strengthening postgraduate medical training, advancing competency-based education, and fostering excellence in healthcare workforce development. Dr. Nyirigira earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree before pursuing postgraduate specialization in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, obtaining a Master of Medicine (MMed) and Fellowship of the College of Anesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (FCA-ECSA). Throughout his career, he has combined clinical excellence with academic leadership, contributing significantly to the development of anesthesia services, pain management programs, and healthcare education in Rwanda and the region. A respected clinician and educator, Dr. Nyirigira has played a key role in training the next generation of anesthesiologists, critical care specialists, and healthcare professionals. His expertise spans perioperative medicine, acute and chronic pain management, simulation-based medical education, patient safety, and quality improvement. He is particularly passionate about integrating evidence-based practice and innovative teaching methodologies into clinical training programs. Dr. Nyirigira is also recognized internationally as a Knowledge Translation in Pain and Research expert. His research focuses on pain management, perioperative care, medical education, simulation-based training, healthcare workforce well-being, burnout prevention, and health systems strengthening in low- and middle-income countries. His scholarly work has contributed to advancing the understanding and implementation of effective pain management strategies in resource-constrained settings. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to pain medicine, Dr. Nyirigira received the prestigious International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Award for Excellence in Pain Research and Management in Developing Countries. This distinction reflects his commitment to improving access to quality pain care and promoting evidence-based approaches to pain management globally. Beyond his clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Nyirigira serves in several national, regional, and international leadership capacities, contributing to professional societies, technical working groups, educational initiatives, and policy development efforts related to anesthesiology, pain medicine, patient safety, and global health. Through these roles, he continues to advocate for high-quality, patient-centered care and the advancement of healthcare education and research. Dr. Nyirigira provides expert anesthesia and pain management services while contributing to the hospital's mission of delivering world-class healthcare through innovation, education, research, and clinical excellence.
