Dr. Ejigu Mekonnen Yayehyirad, widely known as Dr. Yayu, is a highly trained Pediatric Cardiologist at King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda, with a unique background rooted in both surgical precision and humanitarian care. Originally from Ethiopia, Dr. Yayu completed his medical degree and residency in General Surgery at Jimma University Hospital, where he also served as a medical educator. His passion for pediatric cardiology led him to become one of Ethiopia’s pioneering specialists in the field. Through the Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) program, Dr. Yayu received extensive pediatric cardiac training, including participation in international cardiac missions and mentorships that shaped his clinical focus. He further advanced his expertise with a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia (2017–2019)—a transformative experience that solidified his role as a leading voice in pediatric heart care across the region. Today, Dr. Yayu brings compassionate, lifesaving care to children with heart conditions in Rwanda, and remains committed to strengthening pediatric cardiology services across East Africa through education, mentorship, and surgical excellence.
