Dr. Emmanuel Muhawenimana is a Senior Consultant Urological Surgeon with extensive expertise in Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery. He is a COSECSA Certified Fellow and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), reflecting his commitment to excellence in surgical practice and adherence to the highest international standards of patient care..
Dr. Muhawenimana obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from the University of Rwanda, where he also completed his postgraduate training in Urology and qualified as a Urological Surgeon. He further advanced his surgical expertise by earning a University Diploma in Laparoscopic Urological Surgery from the University of Strasbourg, France, and a Master’s Degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery from the University of Rwanda. He also completed advanced fellowship training in Renal Transplant Surgery, equipping him with specialized skills in Kidney Transplantation and the comprehensive surgical management of patients with end-stage kidney disease. His principal areas of clinical expertise include Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery, encompassing advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures, and Renal Transplant Surgery. He has particular expertise in the endoscopic management of Kidney stone disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia, endoscopic treatment of urinary bladder tumors, laparoscopic treatment of undescended testes in children and kidney transplantation..
He is committed to delivering evidence based, patient centered care using the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques to optimize patient outcomes. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Muhawenimana is actively engaged in academic activities, surgical education, and clinical research. He serves as a Senior Lecturer at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Rwanda, where he is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and the training of future urological surgeons. He also holds the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Utah, contributing to international academic collaboration in urology. Furthermore, he serves as Course Co-Director of Urological Courses at the IRCAD Africa Center, a leading international training center dedicated to minimally invasive surgery, where he participates in the development and delivery of advanced hands-on training programs for surgeons from across Africa and beyond..
Dr. Muhawenimana’s research interests include kidney transplantation, living kidney donor outcomes, minimally invasive urological surgery, surgical innovation, and medical education. He remains committed to advancing urological and kidney transplant care through research, innovation, capacity building, and the adoption of cutting-edge surgical technologies that improve patient care in Rwanda and across the African continent..
