About Me:
Dr. Gashema Heritier is a senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist with specialized expertise in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). He is dedicated to improving maternal and newborn health through the provision of comprehensive, evidence-based care for women with high-risk pregnancies and complex obstetric conditions. His work combines advanced clinical practice, medical education, research, and policy development to enhance the quality of maternal healthcare in Rwanda.
Dr. Gashema earned his Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of Rwanda and further advanced his expertise by obtaining a Diploma in Fetal Medicine from the Fetal Medicine Research Center, King's College London, United Kingdom. His specialized training has equipped him with advanced skills in fetal assessment, prenatal diagnosis, and the management of complex maternal and fetal conditions.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gashema has served in several leading healthcare institutions in Rwanda. He has worked as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Rwanda Military Hospital and is currently practicing at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, where he provides specialized care for women with both routine and high-risk pregnancies. During his residency, he trained at the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) and also served at Nyagatare District Hospital and Butaro District Hospital, gaining extensive experience in comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care across different levels of the healthcare system.
Dr. Gashema has a particular interest in the management of high-risk pregnancies, maternal-fetal medicine, fetal ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and the prevention and management of maternal and fetal complications. He is committed to optimizing pregnancy outcomes through early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, and individualized treatment plans for women with complex medical and obstetric conditions.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Gashema is actively involved in medical education. He serves as a Lecturer in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, teaching Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellows, Obstetrics and Gynecology residents, and medical students. He is passionate about mentoring future specialists and strengthening capacity in advanced obstetric care through education and clinical training.
Dr. Gashema is also an accomplished researcher with a strong interest in advancing maternal and newborn health. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications focusing on maternal and neonatal outcomes, including research on gestational diabetes, pregnancy complications, and evidence-based strategies to improve maternal healthcare. His research continues to contribute to improved clinical practice and better health outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Beyond clinical care and research, Dr. Gashema has contributed to national healthcare policy and guideline development. Working alongside the Rwanda Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RSOG) and other health partners, he has participated in the development of national maternal and newborn healthcare guidelines aimed at strengthening the quality and safety of obstetric care across Rwanda.
