The Ketamine Clinic: A New Era in Mental Health Care
Since its inception in May 2024, the Ketamine clinic has provided care to over 50 patients, offering them new hope through this evidence-based treatment. Ketamine therapy is unique because it works differently from traditional antidepressants. While most medications take weeks to show results, ketamine can relieve symptoms within hours or days. It does this by stimulating new connections between brain cells, essentially “rewiring” areas of the brain that have been affected by long-term stress, trauma, or depression. Ketamine also helps regulate glutamate, a key chemical that influences mood, emotions, and thought patterns, allowing patients to break free from the cycle of persistent distress.

The clinic operates with a patient-centered, inclusive approach, allowing individuals to access care through medical referrals or self-referral. This ensures that treatment is available to all who need it, minimizing barriers to care and aligning with Rwanda’s broader mental health strategy. Key aspects of service delivery include:
• Comprehensive Patient Assessment: Ensuring appropriate patient selection based on medical history and mental health evaluation.
• Supervised Infusion Therapy: Administration of ketamine in a controlled hospital setting under the supervision of trained medical professionals.
• Monitoring and Follow-up Care: Continuous assessment of patient progress, with integration into long-term mental health care plans.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Working with psychiatrists, psychologists, and researchers to ensure holistic patient management.

By establishing the Ketamine Clinic, KFH aims to:
– Provide life-changing relief for patients with severe depression, suicidal ideation, PTSD, and anxiety.
– Reduce the incidence of suicide and hospital admissions related to treatment-resistant depression, suicidal ideation, PTSD, and anxiety.
– Strengthen Rwanda’s position as a leader in innovative mental health treatment in Africa.
– Enhance mental health research and training opportunities for healthcare professionals.
