In May 2023, Rwanda made medical history, King Faisal Hospital (KFH) started a program to replace kidneys that cannot function normally.

It’s a treatment that’s often started outside of countries like India, but it’s not popular with everyone. To date, KING Faisal Hospital has transplanted kidneys to 24 patients, and this week four more will be added, which will bring the number to 28.

This time in KFH, there was a gathering of kidney donors, volunteers and those who are assisted by machines in filtering blood, so that the donors can testify about their feelings and the donors show how it is possible to give a second life. These people were also united so that those who have not yet seen the donors of their kidneys feel that life does not end there and that hour by hour they can be changed into history and receive this gift.

King Faisal Hospital in collaboration with Chemicotex Rwanda, which manufactures hygiene products and cosmetic oils, provided hygiene products, oral disease diagnosis and counseling to children studying at Kacyiru Primary School.

It is an activity organized by the hospital in order to celebrate National Oral Disease Day, which is held every March 20th. The pupils of the first grade of primary schools in EP Kacyiru I were explained how to take care of oral hygiene, its importance and the consequences of not taking proper care of hygiene. The management of this school said that the provision of equipment and advice on oral hygiene has helped these children because there are those who do not already have them and that it will help them continue to take care of oral hygiene at a young age. Kubwimana Sosthène, who runs the center, said that King Faisal Hospital has given advice to the children to comply with those that the management of the center respects in terms of cleanliness now that they are about to start their vacation.

Dr. Uwamahoro Madeleine, an Oral Surgeon at the King Faisal Hospital, who participated in the event, said why the hospital decided to help young children, because they need to have the necessary knowledge early so that they can avoid them. He continued,

“We examined them and we found that there were sick pupils who we consulted. We will combine our achievements with the management of the center, and whoever we find with a serious problem will be helped to reach the clinic or we will help them. Dr. Uwamahoro said that the most common oral disease in Rwanda is tooth decay and tooth decay. He said that if this disease is not monitored early, it can even result in the loss of all teeth. He said, “The first tip is to take care of dental hygiene as soon as the child is old enough to be cared for. Also, people should avoid foods that contain too many artificial ingredients.”

Health experts advise that at least a person should be examined for oral diseases every six months and receive advice about their condition.

They included Dr Edgar Kalimba who carried out research on resistance to malaria, Professor Jacob Souopgui who is also conducting research on malaria, and Emmanuel Barutwanayo with research on family-centered maternity care.

Other subjects were epilepsy, cancer, family planning, contraceptives, low back pain, and diabetes, thyroid dysfunction among people with diabetes, safe abortion, sexual reproductive, gender, and child birth among others.

Dr Augustin Sendegeya, the Chief Medical Officer at King Faisal Hospital, said the hospital facilitated the researchers in conducting their studies.

“The research day was organized to showcase the findings of studies to share experience and knowledge to be able to respond to problems and make decisions in improving healthcare,” he said.

He added that the research day could be organized every six months.

Dr Richard Nduwayezu, the Director of Research at King Faisal Hospital, said most of the studies at the hospital are focused on internal medicine (45 per cent), surgery, paediatrics, and laboratory among others.

“We have been providing internal grants since 2021 thanks to the support by King Faisal Foundation to those interested in conducting research at the hospital. We have so far funded 25 projects,” he said.

Kalimba, a paediatrician at King Faisal Hospital who was awarded as the best researcher on malaria, said bringing together researchers to exchange ideas and experience could improve medical care in Rwanda.

“There can’t be development in health care without research development. Research helps to study and understand diseases, discover drugs and technologies to treat such diseases,” he said.

Dieudonné Kwizera Munana who conducted research on diabetes said artificial intelligence or machine learning will help detect and track diabetes to be able to cope with the non-communicable disease.

“I worked with the department in charge of non-communicable diseases at King Faisal to get data for my research. The support was helpful and research day was a great opportunity to share ideas,” he said.

Dr Menelas Nkeshimana, the head of workforce development department at the Ministry of Health, said the initiative to showcase research by medical doctors will guide decision-making in the health sector.

“The studies were on different diseases which need urgent action. Bringing together researchers will help share experience and knowledge in improving health care Rwanda,” he said.
